I have spent the last year talking. I've talked to my suppliers, to my woodworkers, to news makers, book writers, fellow entrepreneurs, crafters and business people, when it comes to Mama Knows Luxury I have talked endlessly! My biggest honour has been talking to my clients and the things they say to me make my heart sing! I have always known why I started this business, now I also know why my clients buy from Mama Knows Luxury and the role we have in their personal happiness scenario!!

People buy things for many reasons, they fulfill their needs and the needs of their families and then they decide how the rest of their money will be spent. They save, they plan and they use a small portion of their hard earned money to carve extra bits of excitement and happiness into their lives. Everyone has that one thing that they would buy if they felt that all of their responsibilities were covered and looked after, that one thing that they would just love to have or to do or to try. I've known from the beginning that we are a niche market and that we would have to learn who our clients are and why they buy from us in order to cater to their specific needs and desires and ultimately generate our own success.
It's no secret, our products are Not Cheap, they truly are the ultimate luxury item of the knit and crochet industry. You would think that my clients are all rich with dollar bills to throw around right?!?!? I'm proud to say that the "rich client" perception is so far from the truth!
Carol took our Arm Knitting Class at The Maker's Keep and has been one of our sweetest clients ever since. She makes blankets and cowls for her family and friends and we love to help her bring joy and happiness to herself and the lucky few who receive her gifts!
So who are our clients and why are they buying from us? What role do we play in their lives? How can a luxury brand possibly be helpful?
For those of you who have met me, interacted with me or read the things I write, you will know that I am an optimistic person and that I believe that we can all work together and collaborate for the collective happiness. I passionately believe that we don't have to compete in a nasty way because we all have room to build our own unique following of clients and supporters based on their beliefs being similar to our own beliefs. I never worry about someone stealing my idea or copying my style, I only feel flattered when someone mimics something I do because this means that someone else is inspired by my own creativity. I choose to ignore those who are malicious in their intent because I know that eventually the balance of life will straighten them out and it's not my place to get worked up by the choices of others. I am a leader, I always have been, it comes naturally to me and I understand the responsibility that I have when it comes to carefully managing the perceptions and beliefs that I share with my followers and supporters. It is only natural for me to share what I learn with those who seek to learn themselves. I love to share my knowledge with those who passionately want to learn something that I am an expert at and I believe that empowering others to build their own strength and success comes back to the original motivator far more often than not.
So, after all of that, back to my clients. Are they rich people with money to spare? Heck No! My clients are normal, hard working people who purchase my items as a special reward for themselves or as a gift for someone who they adore, they are people who want to give beautiful, unique gifts to their favourite people, they are small business owners who want to follow their creative passion and further build their business (these are our Preferred Makers, we will write more about them soon and how you can join our team!). Over and over people tell me their personal stories and I have been brought to tears and humbled on more occasions than you can imagine. Here's just one of the stories I have been told, shared anonymously with permission:
"My husband was laid off this year and we almost lost our house. He had no luck finding work, so many people in our town had been laid off that there just wasn't anything available. We couldn't sell our house and leave because the value dropped significantly and we owed more on the house than we could sell it for. We began to focus on my own small business where I knit scarves and blankets for friends of friends and made a few extra dollars here and there, we knew it could be a much needed temporary financial life line. My husband started watching the kids more and more so I could make and he helped me build my Etsy shop and Social Media presence, that's how we found you, I am obsessed with your Instagram. Somehow, we were able to generate enough income to cover the bills until he finally found a job!! I just had my 30th birthday and my husband spoiled me with your All About Ami Knit Blanket Kit, he told me that he knew I drooled over it and that I would never buy it for myself. Isn't that sweet? He told me that you walked him through everything I would need and that you were incredibly helpful and I just wanted to say thank you! Last year was so tough and now things are starting to look up and I guess this kit is like a symbol of what we went through and how much stronger we are now because of it! Thank you Sarah, I can't wait to make more of these blankets."
What??? Seriously? It's versions of this story that I hear over and over and over again and it's these clients who motivate me to grow and succeed every single day. I am so honoured to be a part of something so special, I am speechless whenever I think on the fact that I get to be a part of someone's special moment, that I get to be their end goal, their celebration, their confirmation that they did the thing that they set out to do.

Some people think Luxury is pointless, that because it is non essential it's a waste of money, time and effort. When I first set out to start this business I was just a teeny bit embarrassed when I told people the price of my items, but not anymore folks! Now I wear my brand role with pride, I'm here, supporting my fellow makers, empowering them to reward themselves for their hard work and giving them all of the tools they need to fulfill their next goal. There's so much pride in what I do, now that I know my true impact!!
