Why do we collaborate? What's the purpose?
Are we fulfilling our inner fangirls?
Are we taking part in a crazy popularity contest?
Is it blatant, shameless marketing?
It's none of these—we promise!
There's a rhyme to our reason, and it's all about giving our clients everything they need to make the beautiful projects they dream of making.
Stephanie from All About Ami collaborated with us throughout 2016. She designed this beautiful knit throw and provided stunning photo tutorials on her www.allaboutami.com blog. We offer all her patterns as full kits in our shop. She helped us take the guesswork out of deciding what you need to make a beautiful throw-sized blanket.
When we set out to launch Mama Knows Luxury in 2016, it took us about 37 seconds to realize we had a lot of ground to cover when it came to being able to answer all the questions our clients were going to throw at us. Just over a year ago, there was a glaring lack of extreme knitting and crocheting info available online, and what could be found was scattered all over the Internet. The questions came so quickly and so consistently it made our heads spin! Here are the most popular questions we heard:
How do I care for my finished item? Can I wash it?
How much wool do I need to make a throw-sized blanket?
How much wool do I need to make a queen-sized blanket?
Is your yarn ethically sourced? Where does it come from?
I've heard big stitch yarn pills and sheds—is that true?
Do you know of a crochet pattern I could use?
Do you know of a knitting pattern I can use?
Other than a blanket, what else can I make?
Do I have to use the roving at full thickness? Can I split it?
Where can I find giant knitting needles that are big enough but still lightweight?
What about a huge, lightweight crochet hook?
How do I join and weave in my ends?
What colour should I use? How many colours do you have?
Can you imagine? What were we going to do?! How were we possibly going to answer all those questions?
Our motivation to get these questions answered was intense; it still is to this day! The truth is that there were no answers to most of these questions a year ago. There were no patterns, and there were very few quality tools. We were going to have to design most of these ourselves, no doubt about it. I'm a designer; I've written many patterns, and I'm a creative soul at heart. I started brainstorming what needed to be designed and made, and I knew almost instantly I just could not do it myself. It would take too long, it would take too much, and it would drain me and break the careful balance of work and family life I am fiercely committed to. I couldn't do it, but it had to be done. I needed help!
We started reaching out, messaging bloggers and designers who had engaged followers. We tried to reach people whose work we admired and who were actively designing and listening to what their followings were asking for. After all, if you speak to an audience and they listen, isn't what they want what really matters? I had to ask my inner fangirl to please stay calm on many occasions! When Michelle from MJ's Off The Hook Designs agreed to design our first crochet blanket pattern with our newly designed giant crochet hooks, I jumped for joy! When Stephanie from All About Ami embarked on a months-long journey with our products, blogging about what she learned along the way, I was over the moon! We were finally able to respond to our clients that yes, we could recommend a knitting pattern, yes, we could recommend a crochet pattern, and yes, we did know where to find beautiful giant tools to work with. Working with design collaborators gave us the time to create educational documents on working with and caring for our yarn and allowed us to source our felting kits and 25 mm knitting needles and get help with building our website. All these collaborations empowered us to design our pattern kits, which allowed our clients to buy everything they needed to make their dream items in one click.
I am a build-the-community, build-the-tribe kind of girl. I love being a part of bringing people together to create joy, fun, and new experiences. Collaboration is the key to a strong community, and the knitting and crocheting community is one I am grateful for and 100% committed to supporting in all ways. I've been blessed to see my hard work return many successes through Mama Knows Luxury, and the collaborations we bring to the table for our clients are our way of saying thank you and of showing that we are here to support our clients and fans—that we are here to share all our knowledge and empower all who seek to work with big stitch yarn to create something beautiful!
Be sure to check out and bookmark our collaborations page—we have so many amazing new partners lined up for 2017 including Knitatude, La Reserve Design, Rescued Paw Designs, and so many more! Each collaborator gets their own page, where you can find links to their blog posts, patterns, and tutorials.
So now you know why we collaborate! What else would you like to know? I'm listening, so lay it on me! Tell me in the comments all the things you want to know and I'll do my best to help you find the answers you seek!
